Do you feel like taking over the pawn shop is something that is ‘I have to do this because I want to live out this legacy’ or do you actually like working there?

I love doing what I do. I’ve grown up there. Since I was a little kid, after school I’d go to the Paris Road store every day and wait until the store closes. And that’s where I grew up. It was a natural progression for me what I studied in school was small business, accounting, and all of those kind of things.

So what do you love most about working at Family Pawn?

Definitely the people I work with. There’s no question that the staff at all the stores, they’re the highlight of my day, every day. All the stories that they tell about what they did this past weekend or what they’re going to do tomorrow night.

Each store has a little bit of a different personality, if you had to sum up all of them in one word, what would it be?

Fun. They all have a lot of fun at work and a lot of fun at home.

What is the craziest thing you have ever seen someone try to pawn or sell?

Iggy the Iguana. When we first took it in, it was supposed to be a short-term gig but we had the pleasure of taking care of it until we found it a new home. I never knew that an iguana, and he was a pretty good size, 4-foot long, they don’t smell the best. They really don’t smell the best in close confined areas. It sat right in front of the main counter for a couple of months. Somebody came in and just fell in love with it and said I’ll take it, I don’t care how much it is.

Everybody watches Pawn Stars and Hardcore Pawn and all the pawn shows that are out there. Why is Family Pawn different than all of those?

Family Pawn is different than all of those, but probably most similar to Pawn Stars, that’s actually a pretty realistic snapshot of the industry. And what I think is that show has done a lot of good for the pawn industry and exposing the fact that we’re not the pulp fiction pawn shops anymore. Pawn shops has evolved in the last 20 years to be very respectful establishments where folks of all walks of life come in and trade new business. It’s definitely not a store to be afraid of. A lot of people still have that stereotype in their mind. Those shows have expanded the diversity of our customers. And we’re really thankful for it because we’re having a lot of people coming in. They’ve seen the show and they got the courage and came to the store. Most of them are repeat customers because they like what they find.

What is your absolute favorite super hero movie of all time?

The Avengers, it’s got a culmination of all the great guys. Tony Stark is my favorite character, I love Iron Man.

If you could have one super power forever? What would it be and why?

I would love to be able to fly because I spend so much of my time driving. Flying would be a lot more fun.

Would you rather eat a gallon of ketchup with stick of melted butter or a gallon of mayonnaise with a glass of pickle juice?

I think the ketchup with butter.

If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to?

In a fight would you rather be armed with only a ping pong paddle or a wiffle ball bat?

I’d take the wiffle ball bat, you’d have a longer reach.

If you could party with any celebrity who would it be and why?

I’d say Will Smith. I like everything that he’s done from a movie standpoint, he’s a stand up guy, he’s done a great job raising his family, and his style is real clean.

Pat McCollum

How many years have you been in the pawn shop business?

25 Years.

And how did you get in it?

My brother got me in it. No that’s not true. You put me on the spot. It’s a long story!

What do you like most about working at Family Pawn?

The independence that we have and the relationships we get to build with the customers we have.

What’s the craziest, most interesting thing someone has ever tried to pawn?

You really want to know? You can’t put it on Facebook. It was a gold IUD birth control device. I can’t remember who took it that day but we passed it off. I think everybody was afraid of it!

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever seen come in to the store?

We loaned on a $25,000 instant scratcher lottery ticket. The guy won and pawned it on a Friday because didn’t get a chance to cash it in. So he got a loan on it so he could go party over the weekend and he got somebody else to loan him the money to go pick it up out of pawn that next week then took it in to cash it in.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?

Fishing or boating at the Lake of the Ozarks.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and what would you do?

To the Caribbean and just be on the beach.

If you could have dinner or party with any celebrity, who would it be?

Hmmm … that’s a tough question. Any celebrity? Rihanna. I like her music and I think she’s hot. I would go to Barbados with her! I would also love to have dinner with Bobby Flay but he would have to cook it too!

Steve Weise

How did you end up in the pawn shop business?

It was an accident I think…I was hitchhiking and got picked up by Don… that’s not true! I ended up in the pawn industry from the hotel industry. It was suggested to a friend because I managed hotels for so long that I might be a good manager for this business that was looking for one.

What are the most popular items people come in to look for?

The most popular item is a good deal. Of course you got your categories…you’ve got people constantly coming by looking at firearms. You have groups and hoards of people who constantly come by and look at jewelry. But people come by every day and just look for a good deal.

What’s the craziest, most interesting thing someone has ever tried to pawn?

Oh gosh there’s a bunch! Some of the most interesting things…someone tried to pawn their prosthetic….their running leg….not just their normal leg…it was their running leg. Another one…a pimp tried to sell one of his “ladies” to one of our employees…and we happened to have a cop sitting in the office! That was the best part.

What is the worst/most embarrassing CD you’ve ever owned?

I love ALL music…I’m never embarrassed…the guys here give me trouble because I have the Hanson’s on my IPOD. But…it’s a fun song! MmmmmBop!

Which celebrity would you enjoy partying with?

A celebrity I would enjoy partying with??? You mean, like a female?!?!? I am allowed to run off with Jodie Foster…IF….Kevin Costner comes to my house and runs off with my wife. BUT…my ALL TIME FAVORITE…..ALL TIME FAVORITE….is Sandra Bullock. I would walk 50 miles to stand in her trash! I LOVE her…I LOVE you Sandra!!!!!

What do you do on the weekends when you’re not here?

I reload. I’m also heavily involved in the Boy Scouts. And shoot quite a bit…but I don’t hunt…just like to shoot.

If you could have a room full of any one thing, what would it be?

Ah ha!!!! SAAANDRA!!!! Ummm…a room of any one thing?? I would have to say friends.

Melissa Rackers

I would have to say my co-workers. They are all freaking awesome! Everybody’s got a different personality which makes us get along really, really well. It’s like family here.

How is it working with a bunch of guys every day?

Oh I love it…so much better, a little less drama! They’re fun…they take care of me and vice versa.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen someone bring in?

Crazy and cool…had it here not too long ago…1996 Chiefs Super Bowl helmet. It was from the Super Bowl IV. Fred Taylor, Lynn Dawson and Bobby Bell had all signed it. It was authenticated. It was pretty freaking cool!

What’s one thing people are surprised to know about you?

I’m a down-to-earth person. I like to get out there and get muddy. I like to go fishing, hunting, go out to the shooting range.

If you could have an endless supply of any one thing, what would it be?

I guess Survivor. I don’t know how I would do it…but I’m ready. Give me the challenge so we can see how I can win some money!

Where do you come up with this stuff!? I’d say the bulls. I don’t think I could do the sharks…once one of them tastes the blood, oh it’d be over with.

Gerard Butler. He is fine..very handsome man…and the accent!! Take me to Ireland right now – lets go!

How’d you get started working at Family Pawn?

There was an ad in the paper. I was working with Fed Ex and wanted a change. Met with Jason and Don and been here over a year now.

Everything is different. No day is ever the same. You don’t get burnt out on it.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen someone try to sell or pawn?

People coming in to sell their gold plated teeth with their teeth still in them. That for me is the weirdest thing…it’s just gross.

What super power would you like to have and why?

Fantastic 4 is my favorite comic book. I want to have “The Things” powers. Ben Grimm, he’s got brute strength and he’s just a loveable guy. Yes, I’m a nerd.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be?

Bruce Lee. Because I think he had many secrets about the human anatomy and what bounds the human body is able to go.

Would you rather be a giant hamster or a tiny rhino?

If I was a giant hamster could I have a giant wheel to roll around in?

If money and time was not an obstacle, what would you do with your life?

I would backpack through Europe and show my fiance all the marvels of the world.

Would you rather have a ketchup-dispensing navel or a pencil-sharpening nose?

Really? If I had to pick one I would say the ketchup-dispensing navel. I’m thinking I could go to fairs and charge for ketchup dispensing. I don’t know!

If you could party with any celebrity who would it be?

Alive or dead? I would have to say Bruce Lee again. I think he has many things he could’ve shared.

TC Beatty

My very good friend, who is the nephew of Pat, got me on here and it’s been a marriage ever since.

The people are great, everything changes daily, it’s fun and I get sweet perks on stuff that comes in. Just the people is the biggest part.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen someone try to sell or pawn?

Someone tried to pawn catfish bait once. Weird. It smelled really bad. It was tempting…but I turned that one down. The coolest? We had a Boul bike come in that was pretty cool. I really wanted to buy it.

What’s your theme song when you walk into a room?

Well…probably Mickey Avalon’s “Mr. Right.” I’m that bar fly and that pretty much describes my life right there. It’s my autobiography in 3 minutes.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

Outgoing. Kind of a lead wolf, per say. And hilarious.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

I hate it when my steering wheel in my truck gets sticky. Drives me insane! I have to pull over and take care of it…I can’t drive.

Would you rather have a pie eating contest or a wheelbarrow race?

I’d say pie eating. There’s a big thing about the wheel barrow because you’re either the person on your hands or the person on your feet. And you don’t know the other person.

If you could own any car, what would it be?

Probably get a Lamborghini. Sharp Red. Some may say I’m a ladies’ man.

Would you rather get free chocolate for one year or free potatoes forever?

I’m going potatoes. Baked potatoes. Mashed potatoes. You can do all kind of stuff.

If you could party with any celebrity who would it be?

This is a good one because there are a lot of people out there. I’m gonna go with Daniel Day-Lewis. I bet that guy could change your life if you partied with him for one night. He’s real intense in his movies, I bet in real life he cuts it up.

J Griffit

It’s exciting. You just never know what’s going to happen on any given day. It’s always a learning curve and always a lot of fun.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen someone try to sell or pawn?

A prosthetic foot! That was the craziest thing. I told the guy I didn’t think we could do anything with it…it was kinda made just for him.

If you could have one talent, what would it be?

It would be cool to know how to play guitar.

If you could be one kind of beer which one would it be and why?

I’ve been on this Left Hand Milk Stout kick here lately. If you let it warm up a little bit, it’s better than when it’s cold.

Probably 16. I had a lot of fun. Played a lot of hockey over the summer. Just good times!

If you could party with any celebrity who would it be?

Morgan Freeman. He’s just so cool. I’d probably just hang out and listen to him talk. He’s got the coolest voice!

J Keller

How’d you get started working at Family Pawn?

They tease me about that all the time. I owned a used car lot and a guy owned me money. He gave me a couple “Rolexes” as payment. I brought them to Family Pawn and had Pat look at them…to tell me of course they were fake. So that began my friendship and relationship here at Family Pawn. You guys seem to have a lot of fun here. What’s one word that describes the crew here? CHAOS! Crazy people! We’re all kind of social misfits but we all somehow get along. It’s like a pack of crazy trailer court dogs that all kind of get along and speak the same language. It just works.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen someone try to sell or pawn?

Ya know…everyone has their own definition of crazy. I’m weird about food. A woman brought in a bag full of stuff…it was video games and cassettes, lots of other stuff….but it was in a bag full of raw chicken. It was dripping all over the counter and all over the floor…and she was fine with it. So I reach in there blindly covered with this covered with this chicken muck. It was horrible…I can still feel it on me.

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

I would say explaining to people how the internet works.

If you had to change your first name, what would you change it to?

I think I would like it if everyone just referred to me as “Wizard” all the time.

In a fight, would you rather be armed with only a Ping-Pong paddle or a Wiffle Ball bat?

I would prefer the Wiffle Ball bat if I could fill it with sand. I’d like the distance it would give me.

If you suddenly found yourself turned into a woman, what would you do for the day?

I’d be down at the dock waiting for the fleet to come in. I think women have a certain advantage socially over men. I would definitely want to exploit that.

Would you rather serve five years in prison or live with … ?

Let me stop you right there….I would rather do anything than serve 5 years in prison. Whatever the second part of this is..I’ll take it.

So you want to live with your parents until you’re 60?

On second thought…prison might not be too bad.

If you could party with any celebrity who would it be?

Party with any celebrity and why? Does Pat count? I really, really like Stevie Nicks. I like her music and her story. I’m sure when this is over I’ll think of a better one…but my from the hip, reflex answer is Stevie Nicks. And people that know me won’t be surprised by that.

L Soderstrom

Would you rather sneeze marbles or fart confetti?

If I had aim of the marbles that’d be fun. Getting confetti out of my pants would be a hassle. I’m going to go with marbles.

If you were stranded on a beach, what three things would you have to have with you?

Beer, a fishing rod, and obviously a boat.

What grown-up job did you want to have when you were a kid?

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a vet.

Would you rather eat a handful of hair or lick 3 public telephones?

Hair is gross and I’d have mouthwash. I’m going to have to go phones.

I know Steve, my job was eliminated at the University of Missouri and he asked me what I was doing. I said nothing right now. And he asked me about being a pawn broker.

So what’s your favorite thing about working at Family Pawn?

Just that it’s new every single day. It’s not the same old, same old. Every day it’s something different.

You came into this not really knowing anything about the pawn industry right?

Pretty much. I used to go to pawn stores. My husband has always gone to pawn stores.

What is the coolest or craziest thing you’ve ever seen someone bring in to either pawn or sell?

The coolest was an antique music box. They pawned it and it was absolutely beautiful.

What song puts you in the best mood ever?

Good Thing by Young Cannibals

Would you rather live on a deserted island by yourself for a year or with a person you despise the most?

By myself. Because I’m very blunt.

I like reading, I enjoy golf. And the ocean. I grew up near the ocean.

Would you rather eat a gallon of mayonnaise by itself or two sticks of melted butter?

Two sticks of melted butter

If you could party with any celebrity who would I be and why?

I grew up around celebrities so it’s not. Jeff of ELO. Because he is absolutely phenomenal. He writes, does the whole 9 yards for what they do.

D Lybarger

How did you end up in the pawn shop business?

I went to the Warrensburg store one day and my cousin-in-law at the time was running that store and he got me hooked up. Worked there for a couple of years, moved back to Kansas City, hooked up with my now wife Courtney and moved up to Columbia. I still had a few connections, I used them as references.

What do you like most about working here?

Getting to play all the different guitars and amplifiers that come in here.

What are the most popular things that people come in here looking for?

Guns of all shapes and sizes.

What is the craziest and most interesting kind of thing that someone has tried to pawn since you’ve been here?

I think the most intriguing thing that I have seen has been a scope that came off a Japanese warship.

What would you do if you had a time machine?

I’d like to see a real life dinosaur for a split second.

How would you react if you were transformed into a fish?

Probably do what a goldfish does and beg for food.

You are trapped in an elevator for 8 hours, would you rather be with 3 large wet dogs or 3 sweaty men with bad breath?

Wet dogs. They’re going to dry first of all.

If Hollywood were to make a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?

Pee-wee Herman

Would you rather have edible hair that regrew each night or retractable wheels on the bottom of you feet?

I’m going with the hair because I’m starting to bald.

If you could party with any celebrity who would it be and why?

I don’t really have a good answer. I’m going to have to pick a really hot celebrity. I’m a really big fan of Selma Hayek.
